About this city - Portland, Victoria, Australia

As the birthplace of European settlement, Portland is steeped in history, with its past playing a big role in its present and future. Many of its 200 heritage buildings from the 1800's are now fine places to dine and/or to stay.

Visitors can enjoy the special ambience and when it comes to dining, the local fishing industry ensures only the freshest seafood is on the menu.

While locals may want to keep it quiet, Portland has some of the best surf this side of Bells Beach. The choice spots are Watertower, Blacknose, Crumpets, Yellow Rock and Murrells.

And for those who like dropping in a line, Portland is an anglers paradise. From a boat or the beach, the range of fish that can be hooked is extensive, including King George whiting, flathead, snapper, tuna and mulloway.

Once a strong rival to Melbourne as the commercial capital of Victoria, Portland survives as a deepwater port and a town studded with historic landscapes which reflect its rich heritage. More than 200 National Trust-listed buildings date back to the 19th century. A standout in the old-age stakes is the Steam Packet Inn, which began life in 1840 as a police barracks and subsequently saw service as a bordello and guest-house before being pensioned-off as a hotel.

Much of the past is reflected in the Portland Maritime Discovery and Visitors Centre whose collection includes the Portland Lifeboat, the oldest surviving vessel in the country. Once home to most efficient whaling fleets, Portland remains a busy port handling cargo worth more than $1 billion a year and also hosts a large fishing fleet.

A 10-minute drive out of town takes you to the Cape Nelson State Park, whose rugged coastline marks the final resting place of a number of ships. Crashing seas still crash into the soaring cliffs of the park which supports a diverse range of bird life. The park presents walks and picnic areas and the Cape Nelson lighthouse is the last manned lighthouse in the state.
